There are smaller crockpots or slow cookers. I have a two or three quart one and I love it because as I live alone, most of the time I'm cooking for only me. I can put something in there for just one main meal and it's done in two or three hours as opposed to seven or eight. For example, when boneless steaks are on sale, I'll buy some and cut them into portions and freeze them. Then, the night before I want one, I'll take one and let it thaw in the fridge over night. If I forget to thaw it, I can thaw it in the microwave, or, as was suggested in another message here, put it in a sealed zip lock bag and immerse in hot water, changing the water every few minutes. Now back to the small crockpot. I cook these steak portions in several different ways. One way is to put the steak in the pot; add a little water, a little wine, and whatever seasonings I prefer that day along with some chopped onion, perhaps some mushrooms, and garlic. If I have them, I can also throw in a few baby carrots and one or two small new potatoes. In about three hours I have a fine meal without a lot of work. I add the small potatoes and carrots just at the beginning of the third hour so they won't cook down to mush.
