Hello Allison,

I've found that if I hold the ID Mate about 6 inches away from whatever I'm trying to scan, then just point the lens at the item, starting from the top, then moving it down toward the bottom, the reading is generally easy to find. Most cans have their bar code near the seam, where the two ends of the label come together. Most boxes have their code either at the top or bottom, or occasionally on one of the sides of the box, but rarely on the front or back. But even if the bar code is not in a normal place on an item, I can slowly aim the ID Mate at the top edge of whatever I'm scanning, then move it toward the bottom, doing this on each side, top and bottom of the object until I get a reading. As long as there is a bar code on the object, you'll either get a reading of whatever the item is, or you'll get a message that says, "Item not found." followdd by instructions on how to record your own label for that unfound item.

Hope this is of some help.

Hi everyone,
We just got our Summit IddD mate and we like it, but we're having trouble with scanning. I've tried to scan a cereal box and I can't get it to show a reading, let alone read the package info. Any tips and tricks by those of you who use it would be appreciated. Is it better to move the scanner or the thing to be scanned? Thanks for any help.
