I've done something similar for years, just a lot easier. Once the trench is scooped out of the cake, I just fill it with chocolate pudding. The instant kind makes it very simple. Maybe not as rich as with chocolate chips, but where I live I don't want to spend a lot of time around a hot stove at this time of year.

Frost with additional whipped cream or sprinkle with sifted confectioners' sugar.
