The problem is that I live alone and can't use up a package before it gets stale. I had a recipe at one time that I was happy with but I lost it.

I can almost guarantee it won't work. Bread ends up chewy and gooey and you
want crunchy.  Do them on the stove or oven.  Or, Pepperidge
Farm makes some great croutons.
