Okay, here's the original. Note that the frosting is not a cream cheese
frosting like is often seen on these -- bakeries don't use the original
because it doesn't last as long in a display case as the hardier frostings.
Title: The Original Red Velvet Cake

½ c butter or margarine
1 ½ c sugar
2 md eggs
1 ts vanilla
1 bt of red food coloring
3 tb (level) cocoa
2 ½ c sifted cake flour
1 c buttermilk
1 ts salt
1 tb vinegar
1 ts soda
Icing:
1 c milk
3 tb flour
1 c butter or margarine (2 sticks)
1 c sugar
1 ts vanilla
Cream sugar, eggs, vanilla and butter or margarine. Make a paste with the
cocoa and red food coloring.; add to the first mixture. Alternately add
flour and buttermilk. Mix soda and vinegar in sm bowl; add to batter.
Blend. Bake in 3 9-inch, or 1 18x9-inch pan for 20 to 25 minutes in a
350°oven. Let cool completely. Meanwhile, Cook milk and flour in a sm
sauce pan stirring constantly until thickened. Let cool completely. Cream
butter or margarine and sugar very well. Add vanilla; blend. Combine with
first mixture; beat well. Spread over cake.
