My cooking thermometer: to remove its battery cover, you give the little
cover a twist counterclockwise, and it pops off.

My guess is that you have to get into the battery compartment to remove a 
strip that is between the battery and it's contact.  As I don't know the 
thermometer you have, I don't know whether a screwdriver is needed.  Did any

instructions come with the unit?  Naturally, if it says to remove the strip 
before pushing a button, and you push the button without removing the strip,

nothing will happen.
