Hi, Will,

When learning to spread butter or anything else, it is best to start with soft 
butter so you can work with it more easily.  For toast, I put a small amount in 
each corner of the toast and work from each corner to the middle of the bread.  
That way you are sure of covering the whole surface.

Use the flat part of the knife blade tilted only slightly so as to move the 
butter over the bread to cover it.  Hope this helps.
