There is no need to be embarrassed about your question.  Folding in usually 
involves something with lots of air in it like beaten egg whites or whipped 
cream, in this case, the fruit salad, whipped topping.

When folding in egg whites or whipped topping, use a slotted spoon or rubber 
spatula.  (I use a wire whisk).  Slice straight down in the middle of the bowl; 
then toward you so you gather some of the mixture on the spoon.  Then come up 
and over to the center of the bowl again.  Turn the bowl slightly clockwise and 
repeat the motion.  It takes time, but prevents the mixture from losing the air.
