Cook turnips fresh while solid.  All that's needed is to cut the hairy 
root off and toss it, then cut the greens off and toss them in the pot, 
then thoroughly scrub the turnips, and quarter the turnips and put them in 
the pot to cook.  If the turnips stay around long enough to get spongey, 
then it's necessary to peel them.  If the turnips are solid though then 
you can eat them with their skins once scrubbed and don't have to peel 
them.
