If I'm cooking something that calls for poultry or fish or if the
substitution can be made without any detriment to the flavor I'll go with
it. Anything that requires the turkey or chicken substitute for beef or pork
I'll go with the asked for meat, as soups, stews, and other things with a
liquid component tend to leech the flavoring out of the meat, leaving fairly
tasteless meats in the recipe. So, for instance, I'll use real pork or beef
sausage for sausage and sauerkraut or red beans and rice or jambalaya.
The key is balance. Eat a healthy balance of protein sources and
carbohydrate sources with a good array of vitamins and minerals, and be very
careful with portion sizes. My blood chemistry is all pretty good, and I'm
dropping (not losing, what people lose they try to find again most of the
time) weight towards a weight goal, which has helped my hypertension and
blood sugar issues. And also remember that if you find out you've eaten
something not on your current diet plan that stress has far more negative
effects on the body than an occasional step outside the lines on your own
diet plan. Relax, compensate for it moving forward, and move on.
Dieting as an exercise can often exhibit most of the key warning signs of
addiction, and it's often self inflicted. Something to think about.
