I go by the at home rule. If I am at home I usually relax and eat things like sliced avocados and sliced tomatoes right off the plate with my fingers. Same thing would apply for most meat on bone and things like that. As it stands though, a lot of what I eat at home requires silverware.
When I am out in public I usually don't order things that require a lot of knife and fork usage, but then I am also careful of ordering something that's not so messy that when I pick it up it'll spill. My default request at some restaurants would be shrimp platters (as those are easy to handle) and at times order a quesadilla (as I rarely eat those at home and are usually pretty good). If I do order something messy, I'm usually with close friends who really don't care who eats what and how as long as we're enjoying our time together. I always keep my appearanace in mind when I eat, particularly out in public. Unfortunately, people do notice and talk and as I don't care most of the time, I'm more comfortable giving off the impression that blind individuals can eat comfortably and competently...and said people do notice when I do so. Apologies for the lengthy message. This is a topic that some blind individuals I have spoken with are sensitive about.
