Ham 'N Apple Shepherd's Pie Recipe

 

Shepherd's pie, gone sweet and savory? It's a dream come true. The layer of
mashed potatoes on top may make this pie seem traditional at first glance,
but the brilliant autumn combo of apples and ham gives it a new twist.

 

Makes six servings.

 

ready in:  2-5 hrs.




ingredients

 

2 cups mashed cooked potatoes
5 cups ham, trimmed of excess fat and chopped
5 tart apples, cored, peeled and chopped
2 Vidalia or other sweet onions, peeled and chopped
1 envelope (1.5 ounce size) dry onion soup mix
1 cube beef or chicken bouillon
1 cup hot water
3 tablespoons butter, melted

directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 

Dissolve onion soup mix and beef or chicken bouillon cube in hot water to
form broth. Set aside. 

In a large, deep baking dish, arrange alternate layers of ham and apples,
sprinkling each layer with onions and reserved onions and broth. Cover with
mashed potatoes. Brush with melted butter. 

Bake at 350 degrees F for 1 to 1 1/2 hours or until potatoes are browned and
dish is heated through. Serve hot.  Enjoy.
