Hey Everyone,

You will find below an email that I sent to all of the Distributed
Manufacturing folk for whom I have emails. They are highlighted in blue in
our
spreadsheet.<http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AiJ9wl9qbZEzdGRYY2YzRlhHemVMT3ZFd1otSHp0anc&hl=en>

If anyone wants to help me out by working on expanding this list and
collecting more contact data, that would be greatly appreciated.
*
The BIG PICTURE: Why are we mapping the Distributed Manufacturing Ecosystem*
We are building a model that aims to finance groups of projects (an
ecosystem<http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0ASJ9wl9qbZEzZGM0Z2Jnc2pfMTQ4MG5zNjNmY2Rw&hl=en>).
We are doing this by both providing funding as well as other forms of
support (see below). In doing this we believe that we can increase the
probability that the projects that we work with will be successful because
of he support that they get from us (OK and FF) as well as the fact that
they are working closely with other projects that they have a strong
relationship with (are a part of an ecosystem).

*I am currently working on talking to as many projects in the Distributed
Manufacturing space as possible to establish that initial ecosystem.*
*
The key connection to make is that proving that this model works will make
it possible to build a bridge between traditional social venture funding
sources (millions of dollars and growing) and early stage projects that
deliver social value (our space!). Hopefully you all see the vital
importance of this and will support the project!*

Further to the following, I am wondering if it would be possible to arrange
a time to speak.

As you may know, OpenKollab, <http://mudball.net/openkollab/> the Forward
Foundation <http://forwardfound.org/> and the P2P
Foundation,<http://p2pfoundation.net/The_Foundation_for_P2P_Alternatives>are
in the process of developing a strategy to develop early stage social
ventures. The strategy takes an
ecosystem<http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0ASJ9wl9qbZEzZGM0Z2Jnc2pfMTQ4MG5zNjNmY2Rw&hl=en>approach
to capacity building in that we are searching for groups of
projects that are related to each other in certain ways.

Last week, myself and Sam Rose from Forward Foundation
<http://forwardfound.org/>talked with Michael Koch from
OpenPario<http://openpario.net/>and Erik DeBruijn from RepRap project
as part of our effort to build a Ecosystem
Pooled Fund Initiative<http://www.slideshare.net/sureshf/openkollab-pooled-fund>
.

Further to this discussion, myself and Sam worked together to create a model
for evaluating sustainability, and scalability of open license distributed
manufacturing projects, based on the discussions Koch and DeBruijn last
week.

In building capacity within a particular ecosystem, we will focus on:

   1. Developing a funding model via the OpenKollab Pooled Fund

   2. Developing Ecosystem Literacies: specific intelligence and strategies
that can help projects in a particular ecosystem to meet the scalability
   criteria identified below.

In service both to developing this model as well as identifying specific
projects that we can work with, we are currently focusing our attention on
the Distributed Manufacturing space. The very first phase of the project is
to commence dialogue with distributed manufacturing projects and to develop
a map of the space. Our initial mapping efforts will be summarized in this
spreadsheet<http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AiJ9wl9qbZEzdGRYY2YzRlhHemVMT3ZFd1otSHp0anc&hl=en>
.

This process will be conducted openly and we encourage anyone interested to
collaborate with us on this endeavour.

In order to commence this process, we are interested in talking to leaders
of various projects in the Distributed Manufacturing space to identify the
following:

*Structural Variables*

   1. Project Mission Statement
   2. Project Goals and associated tasks: what do you want to accomplish in
   the next 12 months?
   3. Project Needs: what are your resource requirements?
   4. Business Model: can your project be self sustaining in the next 12
   months
   5. Relationships: what projects do you have a relationship with? What
projects could you have a relationship with where, collectively, you can
   develop a collective value proposition.

*Scalability Variables*

   1. Is your output part of value chain? It is easy to use output of
project as a building block towards building other things.
   2. is your design modular? - designed for interoperability
   3. is your product replicable? - released under an open license,
shareable online via a clone-able repository.
   4. Project consistently applies a local standard. (designed for
   interoperability)
   5. Sharing parts and suppliers
   6. Project is sufficiently visible in the network.

Would it be possible to arrange a time for a quick Skype chat? My Skype ID
is sureshf.

If so, please let me know your availability.
