Thanks
That fixed it.
After a bit more playing around this feature only seems to be disabled
on coot installed via fink using Bill Scott's binaries on OS X 10.6. I'm
not sure why that would be the case.

Dear John,
by default Coot should label the residue upon recentre (e.g. middle
mouse click or 'space'). In case it doesnt you may have switched this
feature off (somehow). To (re)activate (in python):
set_label_on_recentre_flag(1)
to find out the state:
centre_atom_label_status()
and see:
http://www.biop.ox.ac.uk/coot/doc/chapters/user-manual_4.html#SEC63
To get more information in the 'status bar' (the information bar at
the bottom) you need to double click left mouse, middle mouse click or
use the build-in keyboard shortcut 'l' (for label).
Hope this helps,
B
Is there a way to have coot number the current residue when you advance
residue by pressing space? either by labelling the atom or displaying
the residue's details at the bottom of screen in the information bar (is
this its name?). The information bar (?) at the bottom currently
displays information on the atom / residue highlighted by pressing
"shift left click".
I find that without this information I have to "shift left click" on an
atom every so often to find where I am in my structure - maybe there's a
better way of finding out where I am in the structure?
