Dear All,

A recent X11 package update seemed to break my Coot, so I downloaded the
build_coot_from_scratch script and ran it. It downloaded lots of stuff but when I went
into the coot-0.7-pre-1 subdirectory and ran "./configure", it failed with the
error:
checking for MMDB... no
Error locating necessary mmdb

what is mmdb and where do I get it?

OR ..

which binary do I use? I have Linux 2.6.35.14-97.fc14.x86_64

meanwhile I will try to build from source

I would say look here

http://lmb.bioch.ox.ac.uk/coot/devel/build-info.html

for a fedora 14 binary (it is only i386 at the moment, so that may be problematic for you).

The "coot-from-scratch" *should* work out the box on Fed14. The script should build and install coot for you. The diagnostics can be found in ~/public_html/build-logs/ARCH-HOST/gtk2-build.log and the compiler-specific directory thereof.

(If you want, we can pursue this off-list - the devil's probably in the detail)
