Please don't ask me why, but issuing

"fink remove python"

solves the (run-time) problem.  You won't need to recompile anything.

Fink's python package, as opposed to its "python2.7" package, is just a 
place-holder.

It shouldn't be this way, and I will have to fix the package somehow to ensure 
that only fink's python is invoked/required.

However, meanwhile, this is a very quick and painless fix.
