Hmmm... 

How about:

Edit Preferences -> Others -> Fonts -> Own Label Colour

But really it sounds like a driver bug.  

(Or alternatively it might be a bug in coot - and different graphics
cards handle the bug in different ways - it just so happens that of all
the systems I have tried, none fail in this way).
