A clarification:
# If the client dies, that is _terminates abnormally_, then yes files under
construction will be preserved, namely when the lease expires these files will
be transformed into regular files (HADOOP-1708).
# If the client exits _normally_ (by calling close()), then all files under the
authority of this client that were not closed will be automatically removed.
I should have said "when the client exits", rather than "dies ..." in my
