keep in mind that we will want to implement as close to posix as possible an
api for this in libhdfs: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-4118. We
may not expose all the functionality of general URIs, but for the case of hdfs
only, I think the API should be as simple as possible.
