Isn't the relevant package
[zlib1g|http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/libs/zlib1g]? Or rather,
[zlib|http://packages.ubuntu.com/source/intrepid/zlib]?
[zlibc|http://zlibc.linux.lu/zlibc.html] looks like a library that traps system
calls to offer transparent gzip support, possibly for applications that didn't
implement it...
