Something like:

         checkMalformedUnicodeEscape("b=\\u012xyz\n");
         checkMalformedUnicodeEscape("b=x\\u012yz\n");
         checkMalformedUnicodeEscape("b=xyz\\u012\n");

seems reasonable, updated in-place.
