I've found trouble w/ bad DNS causing lots of fun too. Its one of those things that doesnt show up in the dev process, as all the competent developers have well set up networks. But on my home machine, everything breaks -and not just hadoop. If I could work out exactly what was wrong i'd set up a VMWare image to replicate the situation, and then fix my machine.
