You didn’t mention which application’s preferences. Could the preferences be for an app that uses the VPIO (Voice Processing I/O) unit? The VPIO has a property to turn on and off so-called Voice Processing, which is mostly noise suppression. It would be reasonable to call that property “ambient sound reduction” in a dialog.
