Pretty sure AUHAL is still the best way to do it. There's AVAudioEngine and the related classes, but whenever I tried to use those, I always reverted to just using the C API, because AVAudioEngine was too buggy, and didn't expose all the functionality that you can do with the C API. AVAudioEngine is the SwiftUI of audio programming, if you know what I mean - supposedly the future, but perpetually incomplete and buggy.
