The main reason I would like to use a custom BIOS in my laptop is so
that I could run a processor that I am not sure the stock BIOS would
support and so that I could set a custom clock frequency on it.

My laptop is an HP hdx9494.  Its based on the Intel PM 965 chipset
(Socket 775) and runs higher end dual core T series processors (T8100,
T9500, etc.) as well as the X9000.  It has an 800 MHz FSB.

I and others like me would like to run a quad core processor in it,
probably the QX9300.   It appears to be pin for pin compatible with the
X9000, the main difference being that it has slightly different
operating voltages and its designed for a 1033 MHz bus, but it supports
multiple bus frequencies.  The QX9300 is from the same family as the
X9000. 

What does a BIOS do if it finds a processor that it doesn't recognize ?
What are the chances the stock BIOS will all the QX9300 to run ?   

How does the BIOS set the processor voltage levels ?   What happens if
the voltages are out a bit ?  How does the coreboot BIOS handle
processor voltages ?

The QX9300 is a 2.53GHz part when run on a 1066MHz bus, using a bus
multiplier of 9.5x.  Running on an 800Mhz bus with the same multiplier,
it would run at 1.9 GHz.   The X9000 runs at 2.8 GHz with a bus
multiplier of 14.

Which would be faster, an X9000 (6 MB cache) running at 2.8GHz or a
QX9300 running at 1.9GHz ?

What are the chances that one could get a QX9300 to run with a bus
multiplier of 12 or 14 ?
