If you get a chance, run a timing test. Grab the readserial tool from the latest seabios git and run on your host: git clone git://git.linuxtogo.org/home/kevin/seabios.git ./seabios/tools/readserial.py /dev/ttyS0 (You'll need to replace "ttyS0" with your serial device.)
