Even if it has no immediate effect, exposing such options over nvram (and so they can be modified from the OS using nvramtool) is the right thing to do.
We'll have to reconsider once there's actual hardware without old-style nvram (SMM emulated nvram backed by flash? ;-) ) Patrick
