There weren't any issues in the area I'd suspect would be responsible
(src/arch/x86/Makefile.inc).
You could try to use git bisect (see
http://git-scm.com/book/en/Git-Tools-Debugging-with-Git#Binary-Search)
to pin down the revision that introduced the broken behaviour.
