As for alternatives, you could:

   !!:0 --help

Or setup and alias to do that:

   alias lh='`history -p \!\!:0 --help`'

... and there's bash-completion:

  $ rm --<TAB><TAB>
  --dir               --no-preserve-root  --verbose
  --force             --one-file-system   --version
  --help              --preserve-root
  --interactive       --recursive
