On AIX 5.3 /bin/sh cannot run the tests...

I think our hack of using the wait() status access macros for
manipulating the exit status from shells is failing for AIX.
The attached avoids the use of WTERMSIG() on AIX.
Perhaps we should do this for all platforms?
