Just a small note on this to save anyone else the trouble of looking it up
(as I did).

The implementation is the same - it runs readlink to a small buffer and checks 
if it
worked - it is just written up as a (gnulib) function so it doesn't have to be
re-invented.

I had been curious if there was any other (better) way to figure out if 
something
was a symlink or not; apparently, there isn't.

Incidentally, I wonder what would happen if you passed 0 as the buffer length...
