Oh. Good catch. It seems to me that the "i.e." refers to the "empty protected map" that you would find normally encoded as h'a0' (the encoding of which in turn is 0x41a0). This is then shortened to an empty byte string h'' (the encoding of which in turn is 0x40). The "i.e." could be read as referring to the latter (this is actually more a more likely reading), so it probably should be moved to the first half of the sentence.
