Look what I just got today from Tammy on the County Tyrone list:

http://cotyroneireland.com/trade/bradshaws_dungannon.html

There is a B. Skeffington and John Skeffington (with the e spelling), both shoemakers, in Dungannon, so maybe Patrick Skiffington didn’t some from Donaghmore, after all, and I’ve barking up the wrong tree all these years. Donaghmore is right next door to Dungannon, so to speak.

I have ‘stuff’ on a Bernard Skiffington who, with his wife and a son, ended up in Bothwell, Lanarkshire, where the family was increased manifold, some moving to America at some point in their adulthood. I can’t connect Bernard with Patrick, except that one of his sons is Patrick, but such a common name! This Bernard might have been an uncle.

It’s a shot in the dark (to use more cliches), but it’s a possibility that the John Skeffington could have been related to Patrick in some way.

More chit-chat, Ray,

I have a feeling in my bones that I may have run Patrick Skiffington’s name by Len Swindley before. I have enrolled ‘'paid genealogists, and then a fellow who is associated with the Heritage Museum in Donaghmore even went to the neighbouring town of Dungannon to check the records. My husband and I then visited the canon in his church office, but all to no avail. He suggested we go to Dublin, but we had no time. Why Dublin when there is the PRONI in Belfast for Co. Tyrone records...perhaps. A far out cousins who lives in South Caroline, scanned for a Patrick Skiffington when she went to PRONI, but no luck.

The frustrating thing is that when we popped into the Heritage Museum on the main street in Donaghmore, right at the top of a page was the name Skiffington. I think it had to do with land fees. There was absolutely no one around to help, so we left. When I returned to California I wrote to the museum at least three times, but no one had the courtesy to reply.

More frustration when a woman in England kindly looked up the Donaghmore phone book and sent me the addresses of six residents there. You can imagine my frustration when not one single person responded.

The ironic thing is that we have found out some helpful information after he came to Baltimore, Maryland. We even have a physical description of him from the widow’s application for a pension...which took three years to settle! He volunteered to serve in an infantry regiment at the age of 47 during the American Civil War, fell on his bayonet, and died six months later. We even have a record of his American citizenship, marriage and where his children were baptised in their neighbourhood R.C. church, but not a scrape about his life in Ireland.

The Skiffington name has some connection with Leicester(shire), England, and then the name also surfaces in Ireland, but that’s about all I know.

Phew, ses you!

You’re an optimistic fellow, but as we Scots would say in the Land o’ Cakes (oatcakes), ah hae ma doots...I have my doubts as I’ve been tracking oul Patrick since pussy was a cat!

Still OFF-LIST.

Hello again Maisie.

Thanks for your nice words in reply.
Glad that you were able to find some assistance from my words. (Great for the ego. ha ha.)

Yes, like you, I am now subscribed to both lists, and will see how things work out.

Your SKIFFINGTONs: oh what a pity that you haven’t been able to get anywhere with them — all the more especially so, when the surname is a less-usual one, so that it should be easier to find relevant references.

And yet, with the wonderful way that Len SWINDLEY keeps on transcribing stuff for us, I feel sure that eventually you will hit upon something more on that surname. Good luck with it.

All the best.

Thank you, Ray, for as an unselfish help on the Co Tyrone site, your comments cleared things up somewhat. I have not unsubscribed from the previous list, so will be interested in seeing what transpires.

I am a ‘one issue person,’ and as I have ended up getting nowhere in trying to find out the basics of my husband’s great-grandfather Patrick Skiffington (b around 1812-1815, Donaghmore), I may eventually just drop my sub to this list anyway. It is interesting to read of others’ searches, though.

OFF-LIST.

Hello Maisie.

I did not want to get involved with any argument on the list about this new list, so I am sending this off-list.
Below is something which I extracted from my copy of the invitation sent out.

By going there, you can find another link to a part of their site where you can subscribe.

“… General information about the mailing list is at:
    http://lists.cotyroneireland.com/mailman/listinfo/mailinglist …”

I have not had discussions with anyone at all about the issue, and have never seen or heard of any dissension within the CTI group; so my GUESS is that they have done this so that we are not all left marooned/stranded/in limbo etc. if there should be another really long-term outage at roostweb like we experienced recently. So I am happy to be subscribed to both.

I guess that over coming days there will be discussions etc. which might elucidate some things.

All the best.

Jim,

It is I again, totally computer inept, and so may I prevail upon YOU to subscribe me to the new format, please I inadvertently deleted the message you sent suggesting ways to retain one’s sub to the Co. Tyrone list.

Apologies,

Jim and Tammy,

Whatever it takes to keep me subscribed!

For what it’s worth, I do not care for the present ‘convoluted’ list as one has to scroll forever to get to the meat of the messages, so to speak. I belong to a few other U.K. lists that are much easier to access.

How I wish I could connect my husband’s Patrick Skiffington where he supposedly came from in Donaghmore, born around 1812-15, but the records just don’t seem to be there so far back. Supposedly, he sailed on the Jane Walker, 1835, and settled in Baltimore, Md., but that’s the only conjecture that can be made over many years of research. Worse yet, his wife Bridget Kelly is always shown as just born in Ireland...a needle in a haystack!

Thanks for all the work you ‘brains’ do to support such an informed list.

Maisie
