Hi everyone,

This may be a long-shot, but: is there anyone else out there working on
McGillin/an/ens of Plum Bridge and/or Lowell, MA?

I've gotten to a point where I feel like I'm wandering in circles and down
dead ends. Ancestry has been some help, as well as PRONI, OliveTree
(specifically the JJ Cooke records) and of course Cotyroneireland, but
right now I have a lot of puzzle pieces and can't figure out which ones I
need.

I'm specifically looking for Owen and Ann McGillin, for whom I cannot find
any records beyond those for some of their children:

Stephen McGillin b. 1829 m. Alice McCullow 1/27/1864 in Plum Bridge (father
listed as Owen McGillin)

Patrick McGillen b. 1835 m. Catherine Dailey 11/27/1856 Lowell MA d. 1869
Lowell, MA (this is my line - Owen and Ann are listed as his parents on his
death certificate)

Catherine died in 1872, orphaning their three surviving children: twins
Alice and James (b. 1861) and Charles (b. 1863)

Someone by this name come to St. John, New Brunswick on the Mary Ann (1853)
traveling with "Bell" - I did find an Isabella McGillon of about the right
age who died in Boston in 1863.

Bridget McGillin b. 1840 m. Charles McConnell, 7/31/1864 in Plum Bridge
(father listed as Owen McGillin)

James McGillan b. 1840 m. Jane McQuade 8/14/1869 Lowell, MA d. before 1900
Lowell, MA
Someone by this name came to New York on the Arabian in 1848, traveling
with Susan (b. 1813), John (b. 1844) and Mary Ann (b. 1842) - BUT there's
another James McGillen who came on the Envoy to Quebec in 1852 w John,
Mary, and Sarah Jane, no ages or hometowns listed for any of them.

I know James and Patrick are siblings because I found James (1861) living
with James (1840) and his wife and children in Lowell in the 1880 census,
listed as "nephew." (Charles and Alice were with the Daileys.)

James (1861) m. Mary McGlade in Lowell 12/17/1887. My grandfather, Francis
Edward McGillan, b. 1901, was their last and only surviving child, and was
placed in an orphanage in Manchester, NH as a school-age child, at around
1908 . Mary died in 1939; James (1861) died somewhere between 1911 and 1940
(I have a lead I need to track down and confirm that suggests 1936).

I think at this point what I'd most like to do is figure out which
immigration record the right one for James (b. 1840) and Patrick (b. 1835)
and by extension how the traveling companions are related.

Any help or suggestions gratefully received.

- Jennifer McGillan
