My pleasure Kathleen.
Yes, in your instance, the term relict refers to a widow. Curiously, in a
number of cases of second marriage the clergyman recorded the bride’ s maiden
name and NOT her married name. The bride was recorded as a widow with the same
surname as her father. To eliminate possible doubt it has been necessary on
occasions to refer back to the record of the first marriage.
Pleased to be of some assistance,
Len

You are such a shining star, Len! And thanks for the spelling variations - I
will use them for future searches.

I found one index entry for the marriage, which shows Catherine Bell McFarland
as a relict (widow, correct?), James McFarland, deceased, as her father, and a
James McFarland as a witness.

The witness could easily be her brother, but I'm wondering if she also married
a McFarland, or were they recording her maiden name? I have found nothing in
records online besides her 2nd marriage so far.

Anyone researching this McFarland family? I have several DNA links possibly
involving their descendants, so I'm trying to untangle the web of relationships.

Thanks again, Len!

Kathleen

Hello Kathleen,

Am delighted to learn that a researcher has found an interesting entry in one
of my files. Diverny/ Divernagh/ Deverney (spelt variously) is not a townland,
but a subdenomination. Deverney bridge spans the Camowen River connecting the
townlands of Recarson (Cappagh parish) and Deroran (Clogherny parish). Hope
this shines a bright enough light upon your query?

I'm interested in the families in the following

marriage:

(from http://cotyroneireland.com/marriages/edenderry.html)

#33

April 3 1855

JAMES McELREA full age widower carpenter Diverny, Cappagh. Father: JOHN McELREA
deceased

&

CATHERINE BELL McFARLAND full age widow Benchran, Termon. Father: JAMES
McFARLAND deceased

Witnesses: JAMES McFARLAND & ANDREW HARVEY

I can find nothing like Diverny as a townland name.
My McElrea family in Cappagh lived in Dunmullan and a few other places, so this
is new
, and googling has been unsuccessful.

Any bright ideas out there?

Thanks,
Kathleen
