Hi to All, I cannot find any archived details of a National School in the Townland of Unagh, Parish Lissan… apart from Griffiths records. My g-grandmother lived almost next door and probably attended there with her brothers and sister.
I have described it in my The Lane Family Chapter 3, at: http://www.strong-family.org/lane/chapter_3.html It does exist! It’s in this chapter in maps and a present-day photo at: http://www.strong-family.org/lane/chapter_3.html#national The building is on a small block of land, only 137 m2 at 20 Lough Fea Rd on the B162, post code BT80 9QL. To be sure that we have the right place, there is a plaque on the front: “Unagh National Elementary school house built by voluntary public subscription AD 1834” ! It may have been a Presbyterian Meeting House since the plaque includes the Presbyterian logo… the burning bush and motto “Ardens sed Virens”. I have looked in the right places without success. It is not in the “Index to School Collections” publ. 2014 at PRONI, see: ttps://www.nidirect.gov.uk/publications/index-school-collections-proni. It’s not in our http://cotyroneireland.com/ site either. Two questions: Any ideas about locating records? Also…could someone who lives close by, please contact me off-list with a view to ethically and diplomatically approaching the householder, asking to photograph the house and plaque and also asking questions about the history of the house?
