Cheryl,

Dunn is a fairly common surname in Ireland. Looking at the 1901 Irish
census there were 1749 people of that name, 302 of whom lived in Co
Antrim and 197 in Co. Tyrone. Obviously they were not all related to
each other. Derriaghy (modern spelling) is about 50 miles from Co
Tyrone and unless you think your ancestors may have moved from one
county to the other, I’d be surprised if they were related to the
families in Tyrone.

Derriaghy in the 1700s was rural agricultural land just south of
Belfast. Today it forms part of the city suburbs.

You haven’t said what denomination your ancestor was. If he was Church
of Ireland then the Derriaghy parish records start in 1749. There’s a
copy in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. If he was of
another denomination then the surviving church records are mostly
there too, but not all churches have records for the 1700s so I can’t
guarantee success. Researching ancestors in Ireland in the 1700s can
be very difficult due to the lack of records.
