Coldwell emigration to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia 1863

Hello Barry,

You do not state the religious denomination of your Coldwell forebears and I
assume that they were either Church of Ireland or Presbyterian? Knowledge of
the religious faith of Irish forebears is essential for success.

The information you seek will be very difficult to obtain in Ireland as what
you seek pre dates the introduction of civil registration of Protestant
marriages in 1845 and all births in 1864. So it is most useful to utilise the
very full Victorian shipping and civil registration records in Melbourne

The Eurynome arrived in Melbourne December 1863. In your post you don’t include
the information that the entire family emigrated.

“Eurynome”: Coldwell family:
COLDWELL, THOMAS 50 years
COLDWELL, ISABELLA 50 years
COLDWELL THOMAS 20 years
COLDWELL, JOHN 17 years
COLDWELL, ELIZA 15 years
COLDWELL, HAMILTON 9 years

Ascertaining the native place of the family looks potentially excellent from
information in Victorian records; Victorian marriage & death certificates state
places of birth and marriage (Including Irish townlands). You have a great
selection of certificates to purchase……..these certificates can potentially
contain a whole family tree.

PIONEER INDEX VICTORIAN BIRTHS, MARRIAGES & DEATHS 1836-88
ISABELLA died 1874 aged 61 years Parents: WILLIAM TAYLOR & …… STINSON.
Birthplace Monaghan [Ireland]
THOMAS, JUN. died 1867 aged 27 Parents: THOMAS COLDWELL & ISABELLA TAYLOR.
Birthplace Tyrone

FEDERATION INDEX VICTORIAN BIRTHS, MARRIAGES & DEATHS 1889-1901
THOMAS, SEN. died 1896 aged 84 years Parents: JOSEPH COLDWELL & ELIZABETH PIERCE
JOHN married Elizabeth Ann Argus 1872. Birthplace Tyrone
HAMILTON married Louisa Maria Roscoe 1876. Birthplace Tyrone.

Many Irish emigrant records found in Victoria were not recorded (or have been
lost) in Ireland.

Trust this is useful,

Subject: [CoTyroneMailingList] Co Tyrone Birth

Good evening

I'm trying to find where & when JOHN COLDWELL was born to Thomas Coldwell &
Isabella Taylor about 1842 - 45.

The only information I have is that John was born in Co Tyrone. He died in
Australia on 26 October 1926 and the date shown on his death certificate is 82
indicating a birth year of 1844.

John migrated to Australia aboard the ship 'Eurynome' which departed Liverpool
on 12 October 1863 arriving in Melbourne on 31 December 1863.

Any information on John's birth would be appreciated.

Regards
Barry Cochrane
Australia
