Hello Jeannet,

Thanks for your message; I must firstly advise that I am not a researcher, but
a mere volunteer transcriber of documents and submitter of files to
cotyroneireland.com http://www.cotyroneireland.com/

You did not state if your forebear John Cather stayed in Ireland or emigrated.

It was necessary to search for St John’s Church of Ireland (there are several)
but located the marriage recorded in the registers of Derg Parish Church
(Castlederg, Co. Tyrone)

The marriage certificate states John’s father to be Robert; there is a Robert
Cathers recorded in Griffiths Valuation (c1860) at Carndreen in Termonamongan
parish which actually adjoins Carndreen – most likely he is your man. Working a
further generation back we find a Jacob Cather at Killen (also Termonamongan
parish)

Castlederg or Derg: Baptisms 1807-87; marriages 1807-45; burials 1839-81.

Civil registration records may assist you to tie the families together and may
be found at https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ - some of the records contain
actual images of the original document

Cather is not a common family name in Tyrone so a search of cotyroneireland
http://www.cotyroneireland.com/ will be beneficial.
