Hello Rachel,

You will be aware that all court records prior to the 1850s were destroyed in
the burning of the Public Record Office, Dublin in 1922, hence my attempts to
transcribe Tyrone court records from reports in the press; have searched the
online Tipperary papers 1833/4, but was unable to locate any coverage of court
proceedings for December 30 1833.

Regards,
Len Swindley, Melbourne

Thanks for this resource.

Just thought I would ask for any comments on finding more information about the
Court proceedings for this particular ancestor of mine?

My ancestor was Rodger Hogan, born abt 1803 Borrisoleigh, Tipperary, Ireland
Married Mary Quinlan 1824
30th Dec 1833 Tried and Sentenced 7 years for rioting Co Tipperary
Arrived NSW, Australia 14 Nov 1834 aboard Blenheim.

Thanks Len and Ron. Sentencing seems to be at the whim of the judge and whether

Thanks for your enquiry Dorothy.

For an accurate definition I referred to my copy of The Macquarie Dictionary
(Australia’s national dictionary) which describes the legal term as “to
liberate or take by force or by illegal means from lawful custody” , so I guess
robbery with violence or by deception.

I hope you have found a forebear and regards,
