Yes, please. I would appreciate a copy of his obit. And death certificate is
possible. I believe my great Uncle Jim looks like my dad. So, hopefully there's
a photo.

Thank you!

Tee hee.... born 1850, no wonder I could not find him. He was hardly "a
child" when he emigrated in 1880!!

So, here is his Philly death cert:

Name: Rev James Trainor
Gender: Male
Race: White
Age: 59
Birth Date: 1856
Birth Place: Ireland
Death Date: 18 Jan 1916
Death Place: Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
Father: James Trainor
Mother: Mary Mc Carron
Certificate Number: 14012

....with the details such as mother's maiden name, needed to help locate
him in Ireland, except that he was born before civil records began in 1864,
which complicates matters.

Luckily, RootsIreland has the records for his local church online, so here
is his baptism:

Church Baptism Record
Name: James Trenor Date of Birth:
Date of Baptism: 26-Nov-1854

Gender: Unknown County TYRONE
Father: James Trenor Mother: Mary Mccarron
Occupation:
Sponsor 1 /
Informant 1: Daniel
Sponsor 2 /
Informant 2: Margaret Gallagher

And here is his father in the GV:

James Traynor senior had a small 8 acre farm.

And that means, you can find exactly where he lived using the maps at :

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Now, if you want to find out if he had family left in the area, you need to
start chasing up those Tranors using the GVRBs and then the two censuses of
1901 and 1911.

Hope this helps, Patricia.

My husband and I are traveling to county Tyrone in September. We are
looking for the Meenans, some of whom emigrated to Philadelphia in the
1880's. Specifically, we are looking for Michael meenan and Margaret
Morris meenan, of carrickmore. As far as we can tell, Michael and Margaret
had 6 sons. Owen, born in 1861, emigrated to Philadelphia and died there
in 1916. Michael meenan jr., born 1865, was 30 and never married according
to the 1901 census (which we hope is the right one! ) frank (most likely
Francis, was born in 1872, emigrated to Philadelphia in 1880 and became a
naturalized citizen in 1895. He died in Philadelphia in 1930. Frank was my
husband's great grandfather. There was also John, born 1873, and Joseph,
born 1875. There is no record of either of them emigrating. We think that
michael was the head of the clan. We don't want to go to the wrong area.
Please let me know what you know! Thanks, Carrie Mahan (husband's name
was changed from meenan by his father ).

I checked irish roots website. The family were living in Tremoge which is a
town land just outside Carrickmore. Roberta

I am now heartened that you found records for Patti. I have been trying to go
back beyond my great great grandfather Nathaniel Steenson (and his wife
Margaret Templeton) (and get more info on Nathaniel).

I am going to the genealogy library in San Diego today. Where do you suggest I
look? They have more resources than I do. I assume the Steenson?s came from
Scotland in the 1600s when the Ulster plantations were created.

Nathaniel is listed with two sons in Griffiths Valuation (last name listed as
Steenson). His lessor was William Carberry, Earl of Charelmont in the barony of
Middle Dungannon, parish of Clonfeacle, townland of Dunamony. He was born
?about? 1801 and died December 17, 1873. I don?t have accurate information on
his wife.

His son, William Stenson/Steenson was born in 1836 in Armagh and emigrated to
America with his wife Isabella Eakin and their children (his son George was
born in Oregon and is my paternal grandfather. He died in Iregon in 1915.

I cannot find emigration records except for a passenger list on the Utopia that
landed in New York (from Glasgow, Scotland) August 27, 1874.

Subject: [CoTyroneMailingList] Morrisons of Loughterush townland
        (kilskeery)
Message-ID: <[email protected]>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"

Hello All,
I was able to locate our ancestral farm in Loughterush (and actually visited it
last year), which was in the family up until around 1970 when the last Morrison
on it passed away. I have traced ancestors on the farm back to James Morrison
(for whom I do not have a birth date, but was likely born around 1800). I have
been assuming that our Morrisons originally came from Scotland, but do not know
when.

Can anyone point me to records that might give specific information regarding
individuals who came to this specific townland (as part of the British planter/
colonization that occurred in the 16th-18th centuries)?

Thanks!

Rick Smoll

Carrie:
Here's my "Novice" two-cents.
My Ancestors are from Tyrone County, however I did not know where in the
County. Which was frustrating for me.
My wife and I just returned from Ireland doing genealogy for her family.
Although, we were searching in County Fermanagh, here is what we learned.
We rented a car and drove everywhere.... Get an "automatic" if you have not
driven there before.

*BEFORE YOU GO*....
1. Determine what religion they were before you go. (Roman Catholic , or CI
church of Ireland). You may be able to determine this from death
certificates.
2. Contact a local genealogist from Ireland before you go. My wife set up
an appointment and met with one. He provided information that was
invaluable.
3. Try to obtain as much specific information as you can before you go.
Birth & death certificates hold valuable information.
4. Download a map of Ireland on your cell phone- (Seriously)...
5.
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch
(This web site will allow you view actual maps of N. Ireland "townslands"
for your ancestors.)

*WHILE THERE* ...
4. Talk to local people. Go to their homes and knock on their doors and
tell them who you are searching for. We were surprised and delighted at
what we learned.
( We followed a lady we met this way and she led us to the church /cemetery
where we found many headstones [covered in moss] of my wife's family).
Goldmine !!!
5. *PRONI,* is in Belfast (Lots of microfilm records). Go there if you have
time.

Good Luck!, Mike Richey-

ps. Pack "work gloves" if you plan on going to a cemetery.
pss. We also went here. You will need to set up an appointment.
