Hello Dorothy,

Re. the 1833 Tithe Applotment Book for Clogherney Parish,
https://www.cotyroneireland.com/tithe/t-a-clonfeacle.html you will find entries
for Crossy McQuade and McWade. At that time, phonetic spelling was entirely
acceptable and there may be further variations in the chapel registers. There
are several Cross families recorded offering a possible further avenue for
research.

Hope this helps and wishing much success,
Len Swindley, Melbourne, Australia

Subject: RE: [CoTyroneMailingList] McQuaid/McQuaide

Thank you Len, and Ron. I’m sure they’ll all be related, but HOW is my problem
(and that of most genealogists!) I have the baptism of Michael McQuade on 21
January 1787, sponsors Michael ? and Catherine Kelly. But is this the Michael
who married Isabella Crossy on 14 February 1820 at Clonfeacle. ‘My’ Michael and
Elizth/Isabella Crossy, of Clontyclae, were the parents of Mary Ann baptised 22
August 1824, and of Sarah bapt 1821, and Michael bapt 1826. My information is
from the Parish registers (via FindmyPast), and, as Len says, not easy to read.

Mary Ann married John Clark in Monifieth, Angus, Scotland on 7 January 1844.
There are McQuades in various Censuses in Angus but, again, I can’t find the
connection. Mary Ann was baptised a Roman Catholic but married into a staunchly
Protestant family. On her Death certificate in 1894, her son stated that Mary
Ann’s father was John McLean, Crofter, deceased, and her mother Mary McLean,
maiden surname McLean. So did he change the name to something more acceptable?
Did Mary Ann never talk about her background?

Thank you both for taking the time to respond to my email. Len, I don’t
remember the Clonfeacle tithe applotment books – have I missed them? As you
said, maybe some ancestors just don’t want to be fund…

Dorothy
