Hello Megg,

The date quoted for the report of the loss of the brig "Dispatch" is indeed
correct and was published in the Strabane Morning Post:

Issue: No 958
Tuesday, September 2, 1828
LONDONDERRY JOURNAL OFFICE Wednesday, August 27.
LOSS OF THE BRIG DISPATCH
The Following melancholy letter, detailing the loss of the above vessel, which
sailed from this Port [Derry], bound for Quebec, with passengers, in May last,
has been received by Marcus S. Hill, Esq., our collector :- H. M. S. Tyne, 26th
July, 1828

This is the only record of the event - passenger lists as we know them were
unknown at that time: folk simply booked a passage on the many ships carrying
emigrants from Derry to North America.

Searching for Catholic ancestors can be generally difficult; most surviving
Catholic registers do not commence until the 1830s.

Subject: [CoTyroneMailingList] Margaret and Eleanor McGonigle from Londonderry

Hi, I got a question about my GGGGM Margaret McGonigle who had a mother named
Eleanor McGonigle (? Maiden name).

Emigration to North America from Donagheady Parish 1805-1871

Emigration to North America from Donagheady Parish 1805-1871 Selected extracts
taken from the Londonderry Journa...

This list a James and Margaret McGonigle who were siblings that emigrated to
the USA in 1828. I was wondering if the original record may say 1826? I see a
Margaret and James immigrate in 1826. Margaret married Henry A Kelly in 1827 in
Washington County, Maryland. There is a James A McGonigle family that was also
in Washington County at the same time but I have no DNA proof that I am related
yet.

My Kelly and McGonigle were Catholic.

I haven't found any other records that tie my family to Ireland except that the
US Census records state that Margaret McGonigle's parents were from Ireland.
Henry's father was from Ireland and mother from Maryland.

My cousins have a story about our Elder Kelly, they heard he was a wealthy land
owner and the government seized his property. Not sure if this is true yet.

I am not sure were to look yet. I tried to obtain Henry and Margaret's birth,
baptism or death record but none are available before 1804. I will be trying to
get Joseph Lewis Kellys death certificate if it is available from Maryland.

Through searching through old bible records I did find the baptism records of
Henry and Joseph's children.

I have had a cousin Y haplo test done but requires more testing to get better
matches and additional $200. Not sure if I want to do this yet since I was so
disappointed with no results on the first level of Y hapo testing.

I hope you can help.

With kind regards,

Meggie Abel
