Hello all, Being new to this site I have been astounded at the information that's available when you ask the right person! My husband and I have been working on my Northern Irish/Scottish roots for years now and have found NI to be quite frustrating. But it's the most interesting area and the County Tyrone site continues to amaze. Thank you...
I am keen to find out anything about the McCandless, McDermott and Davis families in the counties of Tyrone, Derry and Donegal. My g-grandfather was Matthew McCandless, born in townland Ardnaguniog, Eglinton County Londonderry on 10th January 1877. He was the illegitimate child of Rebecca McDermott and George McCandless, a labourer. A young Matthew migrated in 1885 to Queensland Australia on the Roma with his adoptive family, that of William Davis and his wife Catherine Davis nee McDermott. According to Catherine's obituary she was born in Loughneas in County Tyrone in 1842. She was likely the sister or cousin of Matthew's mother Rebecca, since Rebecca and Catherine both had a child at the same location and time, and a Dinah McDermott attended the births of both. Catherine also had a brother Matthew McDermott who preceded her to Australia in 1865 and both settled in the Ipswich area. I can find little evidence of Rebecca McDermott's or George McCandless families in the above counties and have hit the proverbial brick wall. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Regards Jill Maiden - Brisbane, Australia
