Thanks for this great contribution, Sandy. Some time ago I commenced an article relating to the Cholera epidemic and its effect in Strabane in 1832-3, and guess I should revisit it. The disease attacked without warning; those afflicted could wake in the morning and be dead before nightfall.Have you seen my two recent files of Leckpatrick Presbyterian Church, Artigarvan records for the many Boak entries? Your Boak forebears of Peacock Bank, Urney parish have their origins in Leckpatrick. All good wishes, Len Swindley, Melbourne, Australia

Tyrone, Northern Ireland: Subscription List 1832 Interesting list with so many familiar names as contributors to the fund. My 3G Uncle was Robert Boak (Jr) abt 1789 - 2Mar1867. He was born in Co. Tyrone, and lost his first spouse to cholera in 1833, location was Pennsylvania, USA. She was Elizabeth Calderwood, bef.1816 - 12Aug1833), daughter of John Calderwood and Isabella Hansen, also from Co Tyrone. Here is the transcribed portion of a handwritten letter Robert Boak wrote to his brother Charles about Elizabeth's death. I include it here as folks may be interested in reading his first-hand account of the terrible disease, both for its description and the style of writing (letter dated 17Aug1833). _My Dear Brother your forebodings have been awfully realized by _ _the writing of this letter. That desolating disease the colera _ _visited me and in a few hours deprived me of a loving _ _and affectionate wife the 12 day of August on the _ _Sabbath morning. She rose as usual to prepare the breakfast _ _and was buried that Evening. She ha d been com plaining for _ _a few d a ys before a nd we ha d made a rr a ngements _ _to re m ove to her Fa ther's the following M ond a y as the dise a se _ _was r ag ing with great virulence in the pa rt of the city in _ _which we lived. O n Sat urd ay night she rested well all _ _night and w hen she saw the Sabbath m orning state d _ _th a t she felt better than she had been for some time past. _ _When in a mom ent she was struck with the shake _ _of death. Oh what a tryal My Dear Brother to see the beloved _ _of your bosom cut off in a m oment and a ll my rel a tives _ _trembling to come near the house. Her own w ish wa s th a t _ _none sh ould co m e ne ar h er lest they c a tch the _ _cont ag ion. In less than five minutes I had the assistance _ _of two doctors who never left her until She breathed _ _her last then orders that she should be immediately _ _buried and the house deserted all their demands as orders _ _were complied with. From the first moment the blood ceased _ _to circulate through the head it was as cold as a piece of _ _marble she suffered severely with the cramps which wrought _ _from the extremities up to her body this disease the Drs removed _ _by external applications. But all means failed to circulate _ _the blood a complete stagnation took place the moment _ _she was taken after a few hours of severe suffering _ _she was removed to the joys of her Lord. _ * * * * * THANKS for all the work that goes into so many contributions to this site.
