Woodkeepers were employed to protect and conserve the numerous woods planted on the estate and guilty tenants were fined and threatened with cancellation of leases. And several major military conflicts and wars have seen their removal for military use. Valuable and popular species were oak, fir, elm, walnut, poplar and alder.
