As Len Swindley has mentioned, most Australian newspapers are accessible on the NLA's Trove website. This is a marvellous free resource that many of us use just about every day. However, be aware that due to copyright laws, most newspapers are digitised to 1955 only. There are some exceptions, eg, Canberra Times and Woman's Weekly and government gazettes are available for much longer periods -- probably to the early 1990s.
Electoral rolls are also free, but not that simple to access. Selected years are available at the NLA and at all state libraries. However, I don't think they are available online (so you have to go there in person), and recent years are not publicly available.
