NIFHS is running a North of Ireland DNA project. You might wantto put your
results on that project (free). It may increase your chances ofgetting a match
with someone who perhaps knows more about the Ewing family.

Wow that’s a lot of replies and suggestions thanks!
To clarify we know JBE came via Queensland briefly, then to NZ bringing cattle
for a farm in Otago, and so there are 2 voyages at least but no-one seems to
track lower class passengers, so this is an unlikely source, and very poorly
documented in NZ it seems. I will try some of the Australian Ewings on a long
shot. Lots of Ewings ended up in Aus, few came to NZ, JBE being the main one,
and a John Ewing from Scotland that also ended up in Otago.
Also our JBE was a teenager when he arrived in Aus separate from his own family
but probably with someone else, so although working on farms I think, he would
barely have figured more than a child and not been worthy of mention. But when
he got to NZ in a few years he started getting noticed.
On some of your suggestions,
I have asked PHS for any more they can do on Presbyt. church records, awaiting
a reply.
Aus national lib. / Trove doesn’t seem to have anything I can spot, immigration
is by state.
Qld immigration records are brilliant .csv files, east to get and search/filter
locally.
NSW not so - passed it off to Ancestry Library edition, and gotta be in the
library to use it, well sorry that’s just no help! This is a major hole in what
I can try.
Vic and Tas are ok to use from memory, but previous searches didn’t locate him
or anything close.
I do understand / accept the ideas of a wider view / different slant being
worth a look. I have done DNA but yet to get some help on decifering it.
My main question is I did it with Family Tree DNA, I think its supposed to be
possible to upload this data to other sites, not figured the how yet, another
bit I can / should do. I guess its not as simply as getting a data file to
upload?
And yes I am aware that there is a possibility that something was being
suppressed that was not ‘good form’ might be making it harder now to figure.
I’m not dejected, I have time, and just looking for any leads I’ve not
considered. And I’ve learnt a lot about the period, its challenges, and many
spectacular contributions from our pioneer women and men, who pretty much
without exception faced huge challenges and did whatever was needed without
fuss. :}}
I’ll report back in a bit if I find out something from your ideas! Greg
