Additional context to Len's point, Ireland had the ability for economic wealth long before the famine and, in part, it is why Tudor and Stewart England took such a strong interest. The other reasons were military strategy, english overpopulation, the economic impacts and challenges of the Little Ice age and ideological scapegoating. You can draw a direct line from Henry VII to the early 1800 conditions and continue through to today.
Specifically, during the early 1800's there was a great deal of poverty and divisiveness that was originally cultivated by the Tudor and Stewarts. Moreover, during this specific period, Tyrone and Donegal were heavily invested in the linen industry but that industry collapsed due to impacts from the ending of the Napoleonic Wars. This created a very long tail economic depression with a heavily divided and angry population that led straight into the famine. As a result of this (rents were rising further with the increased inability to pay), and the ongoing divisiveness (ex. the rebellion of 1798), there was tremendous pressure which leads to inevitable violence. That is what we are reading about. That pressure being built up and released. That is the pattern in the story's, that those often being attacked were landholders or their "agents". This is the release of that tension and stress. This and the ongoing divisiveness (often expressed in Ireland through anti-Catholic laws, violence between Catholic and Protestant) led to a quiet immigration pre-famine. If your family left pre-famine this is probably why. Even if not, it's the conditions being left behind, willing or unwilling. If they left famine to early post-famine, this is the foundation/backbone for that.
