Thanks Eileen and Andrew! Derry was considered the “big smoke” and the point of emigration for our forebears. Memory of the Seige of Derry figured large in their lives. Some 30,000 Scots settlers of the counties of Londonderry, Tyrone and Donegal fled the advancing forces of King James II and were besieged behind the walls of the city of Derry in 1689. The Seige of Derry lasted for a period of 105 days where it is said that some 4,000 refugees succumbed to severe starvation and disease. Relief arrived on August 1 1689 with the arrival of troops from Scotland.
